How YOU Might DISCRIMINATE But Not Know It
Discrimination, needless to say, is a huge pestering problem not only in India but wold wide. Last year it was brought to light with the killing of George Floyd which sparked huge protests in the western countries. In India too, it is a major concern for leaders. Recently it entered into the world of cricket and has been a hot topic. Be it when Mohammed Siraj was called a 'brown dog' in the 3rd test between India and Australia or more recently, the Ollie Robinson issue. The main point is discrimination is very alive. What is disappointing is that this is happening even in the 21st century and this leaves one ashamed. So we got to put an end to it. But the problem is that people could be discriminating without knowing that they are. And as we have seen and known from the above examples, the government is powerless in this situation and it is us who have to put a stop to it. Of course the government could spread awareness but in the end it is us who has to put an end to it.
So, to end discrimination, one must know about it. You might think that discrimination is limited to only skin colour or gender but that is not the case. Imagine you are the owner of a coffee shop. There is the evening rush and there is the line of your daily customers. And then a super rich man walks in, skipping the whole line, his limousine parked right outside your shop. He places his order, and you know the order of the other ten people in the line as they areyour regular customers. Now, be very truthful to yourself, who would you first serve, the rich man and then the people in the line or the line and then the rich man. If you find yourself tempted to serve the rich man first even though he isn't going to pay a rupee more than the other people in the line, you might need to change for the better. Our everyday life, upon further inspection can provide countless other examples. A perplexing thing is that why do you need to call someone American or Indian or by any other thing which relates to their skin colour, gender or caste? Why can't you just call them by their name? If they have some features that you don't then that is fine. They are unique. But that doesn't mean that you aren't unique. Because as it is proven, every one of us will be unique and have qualities that others don't and that is fine. We need to learn to be sensitive and respect others for who they are. We must educate and spread awareness from a younger age so it impacts the decisions they might make in future.
In conclusion, discrimination needs to stop. The mere fact that we are discussing this means that it exists. And the fact that it exists is shameful for us as a community. We all need to go over our day to day decisions that we make and ask ourselves, am I discriminating in any way in doing this action? So let us all pledge to change for the better and stop discrimination because this is one of the problems that can be solved with just a little conscious effort.
